Where winter tires are legally required in Canada

Two provinces have enforceable rules that matter for renters. The rest recommend winter tires but leave the choice to the driver.

Quebec: mandatory December 1 to March 15

Under Quebec's Highway Safety Code, every passenger vehicle registered in the province must have winter tires from December 1 through March 15, and this explicitly includes rental cars. The key detail for travellers: a car you pick up from a Quebec rental lot is Quebec-registered, so it must be equipped — the responsibility travels with the vehicle you're driving. Only tires bearing the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF, sometimes called the Alpine symbol) or studded tires qualify. An "M+S" marking on its own is not enough in Quebec. Driving without compliant tires during the mandate carries a fine of roughly $200 to $300 plus costs. Studded tires are permitted during a defined winter window; check current SAAQ dates if you plan to use them.

Flying into Montreal (YUL) or Quebec City (YQB) in winter? Your rental should already be on winter tires, but it's always worth confirming at the counter before you leave the lot.

British Columbia: required on designated highways, October 1 to April 30

BC doesn't have a province-wide rule, but from October 1 to April 30 winter tires (or approved M+S all-season tires) are required on many designated highways — including the Coquihalla, Highway 3, and most interior and northern routes. BC is more lenient than Quebec here: it accepts either a 3PMSF tire or an M+S-rated tire. The requirement follows the highway, not where the vehicle is registered, so an out-of-province car on the Coquihalla still needs compliant tires. Fines run about $121. If you're heading to the mountains from Vancouver (YVR) or Kelowna (YLW), confirm your tires are winter-rated before you head up.

Other provinces: strongly recommended, not mandated

Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the rest don't legally require winter tires, but conditions absolutely warrant them. If you're picking up in Calgary, Edmonton or Winnipeg in the depths of winter, a winter- or all-weather-tire-equipped vehicle is well worth requesting, especially for highway driving or mountain trips.

Do rental cars in Canada come with winter tires?
